Suede leather

Suede is made from the innermost layer of leather, superficially buffed to enhance its typical velvety feel.

Before cutting, artisans carefully analyse the leather, eliminating any potential imperfections: this delicate process requires time and precision. A latex brush removes dust and residue, while a coarser brush is used to revive the nap, so the shoe remains just as soft and beautiful as you see it now.

Blake Rapid construction with welt

Also known as a triple sole, this construction uses a double stitch, a aesthetically refined technique that makes a shoe more durable, and allows it to be resoled time and time again.

The process begins with careful study of the leather; after finding the best part, the artisan cuts and shapes it round the last to form the upper. This is then delicately hammered to smooth down the seams and soften the parts that come into contact with the foot. Now the upper is ready to be glued to the insole and then attached to the midsole with a Blake stitch: machine-sewn the inside of the shoe. Finally, the outsole is attached with an external Rapid stitch. This, along with the outsole, fixes the welt to the upper hem of the midsole; a style detail that keeps cold air and water out.

Care

Leather gains beauty with age, so long as it is well taken care of. Here’s how:

  1. Use a brush to get rid of dust.
  2. If there are stains, rub them delicately using a soft-bristled brush, for example made from rubber (we use one made out of para rubber).
  3. Spray a brightening spray from 15-20 cm away from the shoe and wait for it to fully dry.
  4. Use a deodorizing spray on the inside of the show; wait a few hours before wearing it.

Design

Historically, the derby shoe is an evolution of the Oxford. However, some attribute its origin to the Victorian era when Edward Smith-Stanley, the 13th Earl of Derby, asked his cobbler to create a shoe with a more open and comfortable cut. It's said that the Earl had a wide instep, and this style provided him with an easier fit.

In technical terms, we say the shoe has a smooth upper: composed of a single piece of leather carefully inspected during cutting to avoid imperfections or defects.

The leather sole is made to last. Its edges are smoothed, buffed and polished. This traditional craftsmanship technique requires time and dexterity.

Made in Italy

Production is based in Montegranaro, in the Marche region, where the tradition of shoemaking has deep roots. For a product that lasts, we only select leathers that age well and put our trust in people who have been in this industry for generations. The artisans in our workshops have learned the job through family and know each and every trade secret. Just like Nazareno, who buffs every shoe with extreme dexterity and precision.

Here are some of their stories.
