Aged leather

The artisan’s touch makes it lovely and soft by lightly hammering its surface, bringing out the natural features of the leather, reviving it and giving it body. We’ve used the very finest and thinnest calfskin leather: durable but soft when worn in.

Antiquing gives the leather a vintage, lived-in charm. After assembling the shoe, the artisan manually lightens parts of the shoe to bring out almost imperceptible depths in color and give the shoe a delicate chiaroscuro appearance. This makes each shoe entirely one-of-a-kind.

Blake stitch construction

This construction method secures the sole to the shoe using a Blake stitch - named after the machine used to create it. The result is a lightweight yet durable product that trained cobblers will be able to resole.

The process begins with careful study of the leather; after finding the best part, the artisan cuts and shapes it round the last to form the upper. This is then delicately hammered to smooth down the seams and soften the parts that come into contact with the foot. Now the upper is ready to be glued to the insole and then attached to the outsole with a Blake stitch; the artisan guides the shoe under the needle with precision and expertise.

Care

Leather gains beauty with age, so long as it is well taken care of. Here’s how:

  1. Use a brush to get rid of dust.
  2. Use the same brush to apply a cream. If the shoe is lightly colored, you’re better off using one that’s transparent or has a neutral color.
  3. Wait at least 20 minutes: when the polish has dried, buff it in using a dry cloth.
  4. Spray a deodorizing sanitizer spray on the inside of the shoe and wait a few hours before wearing.

Design

In technical terms, we say the shoe has a split upper: composed of multiple pieces of leather assembled during construction.

Spot the distinctive wingtip broguing at the toe: embellished with small perforations known as ‘five of diamonds’ – a nod to playing cards.

We have combined tassels with fringe: for those who love details. The fringe is made from the same leather as the shoe, while the tassels are meticulously hand-sewn.

The leather sole is made to last. Its edges are smoothed, buffed and polished. This traditional craftsmanship technique requires time and dexterity.

Made in Italy

Production is based in Montegranaro, in the Marche region, where the tradition of shoemaking has deep roots. For a product that lasts, we only select leathers that age well and put our trust in people who have been in this industry for generations. The artisans in our workshops have learned the job through family and know each and every trade secret. Just like Paolo, who polishes leather with extreme care.

Here are some of their stories.
